Special Recreation Opportunities for Residents with Disabilities
The Park District of Forest Park, through WSSRA, offers over 60 programs for Park District of Forest Park residents with disabilities. All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities. Many WSSRA programs are similar to traditional park district classes. WSSRA's swim lessons, fitness classes, scouting programs and day camp are some examples of that. It's when children and adults with disabilities need unique or technical assistance, and greater supervision that WSSRA's expertise shines.
At WSSRA programs, a Recreation Specialist will adapt how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and if any equipment accommodation needs are to be arranged. Communication boards, wheelchair use, behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful. Others are designed so that the competition is at a fair level, as in Special Olympics.
Park District of Forest Park residents who are school age and receive special education services and adults with developmental disabilities can join WSSRA's Special Olympic teams or compete in individual sports. The Association competes in Track-n-Field, Bowling and WSSRA has the Stingray Swim team, and the Bobcats Basketball and Softball teams. Before competitions, the athletes practice with WSSRA weekly. Skills are polished and new techniques are learned. Most importantly, the participants have fun and learn to appreciate the value of trying their best.
